A London company market committee for underwriters providing professional indemnity cover to the construction industry was established by the IUA in 2019. A particular focus was to address issues surrounding the use of cladding and fire protection in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire. The group aims to encourage a more technical underwriting approach and improve the availability of professional indemnity cover across the sector. It promotes engagement between insurers, the construction industry, government and regulators.

Model Proposal Form for Construction Professional Indemnity Risks

The IUA’s Construction Professional Lines Working Group drafted a model Design and Construct Proposal Form to help provide consistency for clients and practitioners in the formatting and information requirements for evolving risk profiles in the sector.
As with all of the IUA’s model policy clauses and forms, this proposal is made freely available and it is not compulsory for the form to be used as published, nor is it intended to replace the exercise of independent judgement. It is the responsibility of each individual company to judge their own circumstances when deciding whether or not to use this model proposal form.

Building Safety Fund Cladding and Fire Safety Limited Exclusion and Aggregation Clause

A model insurance clause covering fire safety risks was developed by the IUA and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities for use in work being completed under the government’s £4.5bn Building Safety Fund. The model clause is freely available for use by underwriters looking to provide professional indemnity insurance for building cladding remediation work. The Building Safety Fund was introduced in order to cover the cost of such refurbishment work on high rise residential blocks over 18m.
