Where does authority begin and end in delegated arrangements? How clearly are roles, responsibilities and decision-making powers expressed in policy wordings? What does good drafting look like when structuring delegated authority business?

For budding underwriting, claims and broking practitioners, it is important to understand one of the fundamental (but often lesser discussed) insurance structures: delegated authority.

This will be the second session of our IUA Policy Wordings Masterclass series in 2026, hosted by the IUA’s Clauses Committee. We will explore key drafting considerations for binding authorities and coverholder arrangements, including how authority is defined, how responsibilities are allocated, and how wordings can be structured to avoid ambiguity.

Importantly, we will focus on the practical implications for day-to-day roles, considering how clearer drafting can support more effective oversight, reduce the risk of disputes, and ensure alignment between insurers, coverholders and brokers.

The IUA’s Clauses Committee is comprised of over 50 wordings experts from IUA member companies and broking firms. The group is responsible for publishing all clauses with an IUA code and is focused on thought leadership, exploring technical and drafting issues facing insurers and reinsurers in the London Market.
