Technical Training

California Fair Claims Handling

The California Department of Insurance requires that anyone involved in handling, adjusting, or settling claims on Californian risks must receive annual training on the state’s Fair Claims Practices regulations. A 90 minute briefing session is hosted by the IUA twice a year to provide the training. All aspects of the regulations are covered and there are opportunities to ask questions of our expert speaker. Certification is provided to evidence an individual's attendance. Details of the next training session will appear in the market briefing diary on this page. For further information about the content of the California Claims Training Session, please contact Tom Hughes, tel. 020 7617 5445.

Competition Law

An awareness of competition law is essential for London Market practitioners. The IUA hosts quarterly competition law training events explaining legal frameworks surrounding the exchange of commercially sensitive information. Details of each event are posted in the market briefing diary on this page. Also available is an IUA summary of Competition Law Dos and Don'ts.

International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) Tutorials

The IUA has purchased a number of licences for IUMI marine hull and marine cargo tutorials. These online training courses are tailored for intermediate level underwriters who wish to deepen their knowledge and expertise and are available for IUA members to use. For further information please contact Chris Jones, tel. 020 7617 5447.

Single Claims Agreement Parties

The Single Claims Agreement Party (SCAP) is designed to provide a more effective process for determining and settling cross-market, non-complex claims in the London Market which have a value of £250,000 or below. The IUA hosts regular training with Charlotte Warr, of Sarnia Training Limited, explaining the practical operation of SCAP in the placing and claims processes. Details of the next training session will appear in the market briefing diary on this page. A recording of a previous session is also available to view here on the IUA YouTube channel.

Sustainability Training

IUA members may take advantage of discounted access to sustainability training offered by the Better Insurance Network. The organisation has developed a dedicated sustainability e-learning programme – 'Sustainability for Insurers' – to equip insurance employees with a solid grounding in industry and role-specific sustainability.

US Claims Litigation Training

IUA members may take advantage of a superb opportunity for claims practitioners to attend a US litigation training course in New York. Hosted annually by the association and law firm Wilson Elser, the one week course provides delegates with a structured week of presentations by experienced attorneys from Wilson Elser’s US Offices, plus visits to a US District Courthouse and a State County Courthouse. For more details, please contact Tom Hughes, tel. 020 7617 5445.

Committee Events

Networking breakfasts

Several IUA market groups run networking breakfast events that involve discussion groups led by senior market figures. These events are currently in place for the following business lines: liability, directors and officers, property and political risks. Invitations are circulated to and forwarded by members of the relevant IUA committees.

Human Resources and Training Committee

The IUA's HR and Training Committee provides a forum for members to share industry training and education information. The group provides regular input into the IUA's programme of market briefings and has hosted a number of events directly addressing issues of workplace culture.

Policy Wording Masterclasses

The IUA's Clauses Committee hosts workshops addressing fundamental questions relating to the drafting of insurance contracts. Member experts from the group explain how an effective insurance process is underpinned by clear and comprehensive policy wordings. Several events are organised each year with the programme including an introductory session, plus more detailed discussions. Individual events will be posted in the diary section of this page and circulated to contacts on our events distribution mailing list.
