In recent years, UK insurance firms have operated in an increasingly complex and heavily regulated environment, having been previously supervised by the DTI and HM Treasury, then by the FSA and before long, by the FCA and PRA in tandem.

The expectations of the compliance, risk and internal audit functions in the financial services sector change constantly. New standards are introduced by a wide range of professional bodies, statutes and regulators that impact on the skills and knowledge needed in these key roles.

Drawing on extensive experience, our speakers will present this Market Briefing on the most important regulatory issues of the moment and provide an overview of a variety of current regulatory hot topics, future regulatory challenges and issues facing insurance industry practitioners.

Topics to be discussed encompass current trends in FSA supervision, including the use of ARROW visits and Skilled Person Reports, the FSA's CASS review, the European Commission's review of the Insurance Mediation Directive, anti-bribery and corruption and EU data protection proposals.

Speakers:
Chris Gagg is a Director in the Regulatory Advisory Practice at Grant Thornton and has over 12 years’ general insurance sector experience across a variety of disciplines, including regulatory, internal audit and external audit and corporate finance. He currently leads the client money team at Grant Thornton and continues to conduct a number of Section 166 Skilled Persons reviews on the subject. He is recognised within the financial services market as a leading expert on client money regulation and financial systems and controls, and currently participates on both the FSA Client Money advisory panel and the LIIBA working party for client money regulation.

Jonathan Houston is an Associate Director in the Regulatory Practice at Grant Thornton and is responsible for advising clients in the general insurance sector on a variety of FSA regulatory matters. He has over 30 years' experience in the insurance market, having started his career at a major Lloyd's insurance broker. Jonathan is a Chartered Insurance Practitioner.
